I'm so god damn unfit!

I remember back when I was in Japan last October that I vowed never to travel again until I got fit. I forgot how seriously hard and exahausting travel is when you are overweight and unfit. I am so annoyed at myself for not putting in more of an effort before I went away. At least I am now building my fitness with all this walking, I just wish I had the energy to do more- it is so frustrating.

The good news is that it has revitalised my desire to exercise more and work on my fitness. The past 6 months all my focus has been on my new job and I have definitely put my health on the back burner. When you work 14-16 hour days there is literally no time to fit exercise in so I need to find a balance and put my health first. Travel has a good way of putting your life in perspective.

Also, I am seriously considering doing weight watchers when I get back, just to have the support and accountability. I must be the only overweight person I know who has never tried WW or Jenny Craig. I think what might work for me with WW is the points system because I have a tendency to be too strict when I am trying to lose weight. Having a set amount of points to eat a day might help me with the guilt I feel when I eat and I wouldn't feel bad as long as I stayed within my points. Plus I would die if I had to go to a meeting and post a gain, so that would keep me honest! I would love to hear all your stories (good or bad) about doing WW.

  1. I'm really glad you are getting in touch with your body again. I agree that traveling is a good way to put one's life in perspective. Perhaps that's what I need right now some perspective, because I've been very off kilter.

I haven't done WW or Jenny Craig, but many of the bloggers I read seem to be doing WW and having great success.

Looking forward to reading about your adventures in Rome and Paris.

  2. That sounds really sensible, I think it is terrific if we can work out what will work for us, based on our previous patterns, that sounds like you are right.

  3. I've done WW several times and always lost weight on it. In my opinion it's better than JC because you're not eating pre-packaged food - you can pretty much eat what you want but you just have to be sensible about portion sizes. Also, exercise is encouraged and rewarded. If you're looking for accountability the weekly weigh-in is a good incentive too. Unfortunately for me the novelty has worn off now but I still think it's a sensible program and not something you ever have to "go off". Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide.

  4. I love WW, I have done both JC (awful pre-packaged food without variety) and WW (lots of choices, sensible for real life) and though I lost a ton (80 lbs) on JC, I am happier and I believe healthier doing WW.

Good luck no matter what you choose!

  5. WW worked for me. It teaches you how to eat a well balanced diet. You don't feel deprived as there is still lee-way for treats.

    Good luck with your decision:-)

  6. I did WW like 10 years ago but I was too young to utilize and appreciate it but I do think it seems a lot better than JC as other people have said. I dont think packaged food should run your life - for one its expensive and secondly its processed and full of additives, it just doesnt seem conducive to healthy eating. I'm not anti-frozen food I just think that in moderation is better than picking up a box and having your meal. Um, I'm getting off track...Oh, yeah travel - I'm pretty much desperate to travel and continue to see the world so losing weight is a big motivator for me as well. Not only are you more comfortable but you have more energy and have a more enjoyable time as a result.

  7. Hi Tully, I found your blog, while hunting down blogs on Optifast. But it seems those were posts from 3 years ago!! I'm getting ready to start that plan to kick start my weightloss.

I've done both Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig in the past. I've struggled with Weight Watchers because I'm a food addict and because here in the States the meetings seem to have become a tool for marketing their products rather than supportive and imformational.

That being said, I think their CORE plan is top notch and is what I will eventually wean myself on to when I'm ready to transition off of the Optifast. I'll be interested to hear how you like the WW program.

  8. Hi there, just saw your blog and wanted to say hi. Actually, I have a cousin named Tully and so I was kind of "pulled" here!
Anyway, I just wanted to say that WW is great and if you choose to do it there is so much help out there for you. (also, lots of people have already done the work with great recipes and stuff...not so much me, I just complain about myself :-) )
    Gl...
