Food For Thought

I have been thinking a lot over the past year and my thoughts led me to a place I never thought I would go. I recently attended this information session for Bariatric Surgery.

There was a moment during the night that really hit home for me. A girl my age got up to speak about her experience of having a lap band and how it has changed her life. She said for her that it has freed her mind and her obsession with food and she just feels normal for the first time in her life. I can't say I didn't cry.

I have a lot to think about over the next few months.

  1. For what it's worth: I don't think you need that surgery. You're not massively obese or anything.... but that's just my opinion and I guess if it's right for you then it's right for you.

  2. Hey gorgeous. Pop over to my blog and link to 'Nola' on my friends list, she is a recent lap bander who writes a very honest and amusing blog.

  3. I agree with Anonymous.

And I personally believe that you haven't 'worked on your insides' to an extent that would be beneficial, and as a result, you get distracted by quick fixes. There are a few posts on this blog that have shown promise - like the recent one about the pink girl donut - where you've looked at yourself and found out the reason behind a certain behaviour, and I think you would be MUCH more successful if you continued to do this.

    I'm sorry if this came out sounding harsh, but you're my girl, and I want to be honest with you. {{{HUGZ}}}

  4. Someone very close to me has had the Lap band done twice - she is a very intelligent person who quickly figured out how to cheat with the lap band, such as which chocolate foods she could eat without being sick and vomiting after overeating. She is still 3 years later bigger than what she was when she started.

The emotional needs for her eating problems did not go away just by having major surgery.

I would definitely suggest getting some help with the emotional needs that you have.

You do deserve to feel great! Not just look great and be healthy and slim but to feel great emotionally. While it is hard to face our problems it is so worth it.

  5. All I want to say is 'each to their own'... we will support you no matter what you choose to do mate.

  6. I'm with Chris H. I know you are intellegent enough to weigh up all the pro's & con's & make the best decision for you. I'll support your decision which ever way you choose. (((hugs)))

  7. Hey my darling.... I have 4 friends that have had lap band. 3 are bigger than when they started and one is now 63 kilos lighter!! I have mixed feelings about the program.
You are so similar to me ... I wish you lived closer!!
But at the end of the day, when you want to do it, you will!! We have both done it before and looked fantastic .... we didn't need an operation the first time!! Lets get our shit together and make 2009 our year!!?? Together!!

  8. I just wanted to add my name to list of people who think you don't need it. But I also wanted to add my name to the list of people who'd support you no matter what you decide.

    Much peace.

  9. Good luck on whatever decision you choose to make :)

  10. Could I add some more things for you to mull over in the next few months?
I am about the same size as you, but quite a bit older. While the size/health may be a serious issue, I don't think it is the root problem. As I read your blog (I haven't gotten to all of it) I have seen several things which make me think that you need to scratch a bit deeper for the emotional problems.
You seem to be drowning your emotional pain in food and drink. It has pained me to see how you believe that it is normal to pass out every Saturday night and go to work hung over in the mornings. Your brother has taken advantage of your boundry issues (money).
I don't say this to be mean, but just to ask you to look at the big picture.
Perhaps just as part of the "thinking and mulling" in the next few months you could go to a few meetings of AA or OA.
I'm not judging you harshly, my hat is off to you, you are far more open and willing to change than I was at your age.
And I have read enough of the blog to know that it is totally misnamed. You are pretty, and intelligent, and funny, and well-spoken, and thought provoking.

  11. Hi sweetheart, just wanted to say I'm here for you if you need to chat.

    Big hugs

Awww thanks so much for the comment!
